“Neighborhoodness” of Urban Services as a Dimension of Spatial Segregation

The article considers the quality of neighborhood services available to local residents as a dimension perceived spatial segregation. concept “neighborhoodness” ofservices targets evaluation amenities demanded by neighbors and positively assessed satisfying their daily needs. study addresses gap in neighborhoodservices studies, mostly focused on service accessibility variety impact housing land value, but paying little attention both at level. We argue that two types should be distinguished: aimed andservices physically localized external user groups. research methodology is based consideration subjective objective dimensions comparing data availability taken from neighbors’discussions. Two online communities historical new areas Saint Petersburg, Russia, are considered, each covering more than 9,000 participants regularly conversing about neighborhoods. analysis covers typology metrics venueswithin selected pedestrian boundaries presented Google Maps. perception semiautomated semantic fields “service” concepts such restaurant, café, store, qualitatively identified intensively discussed communities.
